More Than Martial Arts: Finding Community and Belonging at International Martial Arts Center NYC
In a city of millions of people, it is still possible to feel alone.
New York City moves quickly. People work long hours, spend much of their lives online, move from neighborhood to neighborhood, and often come to the city without an established circle of friends. For many young adults especially, finding a place where they genuinely feel welcome and connected can be just as important as finding a place to exercise.
At International Martial Arts Center in the East Village, we believe martial arts can provide both.
Since 1994, thousands of students have walked through our doors to study traditional ITF Taekwondo and reality-based Hapkido. Over the decades, one of the comments we have heard again and again from new students is not simply about the quality of the martial arts training.
They tell us:
“Everyone here is so friendly.”
“People are so helpful.”
“There is such a positive atmosphere here.”
That means a great deal to us, because this is exactly what a martial arts school should be.
A Martial Arts School Without the Ego
Beginning martial arts can be intimidating.
You may walk into a class knowing absolutely nothing while someone beside you has been training for years. You may worry about being uncoordinated, making mistakes, being out of shape, or simply not fitting in.
The last thing a beginner needs is to be surrounded by ego.
At International Martial Arts Center, our philosophy has always been different.
Higher-ranking students help lower-ranking students. Experienced students share their knowledge rather than showing off what they know. Students encourage one another, laugh together, train together and celebrate each other’s progress.
Nobody has to prove that they are better than the person standing next to them.
The real competition is with yourself.
Can you become a little stronger?
Can you improve your technique?
Can you become more focused?
Can you remain calm when something is difficult?
Can you become more patient, generous and compassionate toward other people?
That is a much deeper purpose of traditional martial arts training.
We Rise Together
There have been times before promotion tests when students were ready to test, but one or two members of their group were away.
What did they do?
They waited.
They wanted their classmates to return so that they could take the promotion test and advance together.
This has happened more than once at our school, and it says something important about the community that has developed here.
Martial arts training does not have to be about defeating somebody else. At its best, training helps everyone in the room improve.
One student’s progress can inspire another. One student’s knowledge can help another overcome a difficult technique. When somebody struggles, another person can encourage them.
We rise together.
A Community That Has Spread Around the World
International Martial Arts Center has been part of New York City since 1994, and one of the greatest rewards of all those years is seeing what happens long after students leave the school.
People move away. Careers take them to other states and other countries. Lives change.
Yet many former students remain in touch with us through Facebook and other means, sometimes decades after they trained here.
And when they return to New York City, many stop by the school.
We tell them: Come join the class. Train with us again.
And they do.
For an hour, years can seem to disappear. They are back on the floor, exercising, practicing techniques and reconnecting with the community they once trained with.
What began as a martial arts school in the East Village has gradually become a community spread across many parts of the world.
A Happy Place to Train
We have been extraordinarily fortunate.
Over more than three decades, IMAC has attracted people of different ages, professions, backgrounds and levels of martial arts experience. Yet generation after generation, the same positive character has continued.
People smile.
People help one another.
People share what they know.
People work hard without taking themselves too seriously.
There is positive energy in the school because the students genuinely enjoy being there.
You can teach excellent martial arts techniques, but the environment in which those techniques are taught matters tremendously. A negative or egotistical atmosphere can make even good training unpleasant.
A positive environment allows people to relax enough to learn, work hard enough to improve and feel comfortable enough to keep coming back.
We believe IMAC is a happy place.
And we are proud of that.
Traditional Martial Arts for Modern New Yorkers
At International Martial Arts Center, students learn traditional ITF Taekwondo and reality-based Hapkido while developing physical conditioning, practical skills, concentration, confidence and self-control.
But martial arts is about more than kicking and punching.
Traditional training also develops the person performing those techniques.
It teaches us to focus.
To breathe.
To persevere.
To control ourselves.
To respect other people.
To help someone who knows less than we do.
And to understand that becoming stronger does not require making someone else feel weaker.
This is especially meaningful today.
When so much of modern life takes place through screens, martial arts provides something very human: people standing together in the same room, learning from one another, working toward goals and sharing a real experience.
You are not a username.
You are not a follower.
You are part of the class.
